Bowel movements are an automatic part of one’s day and not something that one really thinks about till something goes wrong. When there is no bowel movement one gets constipated. This has an adverse impact on one’s health. It can also cause other health problems that are related to it. The daily bowel movements by our bodies are to eliminate waste and toxins from the body. When this process is delayed, our body has to bear the ill effects of carrying this load of toxic waste within. Ti is not only uncomfortable but also very bad for one’s health.
Ayurveda’s View Of Constipation
Ayurveda considers the process of digestion to be vital to one’s overall good health. The Agni or fire of digestion is what governs the quality and efficiency of the process of digestion in a person. The Agni is at its highest in the day and is relative to the position of the sun. When the sun is at noon the body is at its highest capacity to properly digest food. As the sun sets the Agni in the body cools and the ability to digest well slows. Since the body absorbs things in the day this is the time to ingest food, Expelling the waste in the form of stool in the morning prevents the absorption of the waste by the body. This is why a daily morning bowel movement is so important to good health. When a person has a proper bowel movement it should make him/her feel lighter and better. Stress, inadequate sleep, dehydration, unhealthy gut, improper diet and ignoring the urge to pass motion are all cited by Ayurveda as causes for constipation.
The Vata Dosha governs movement in the body. It is also the Dosha that causes dryness. So when it is imbalanced it dries out the contents of the bowels. Pitta is a heaty Dosha that can also dry the contents of the bowels. So constipation is a problem created by the imbalance of these two Doshas. The Apana Vata is responsible for downward movement which includes the content of the bowels. Kapha imbalances cause the blockage of the movement of the bowels through excessive mucus or undigested food blocking it. When the constipation is caused by a particular Dosha problem, the person will be advised to eat a diet that does not aggravate that Dosha. Most often the problem would be a result of a combination of Vata Dosha with another Dosha.
According to Ayurveda the digestive fire or Agni varies with the position of the sun. So, one must eat heavier meals when the sun is high in the sky and eat lighter food at other times. Dining late at night is not recommended. Meals should be on time and in a relaxed environment. One must drink enough water and eat food that is fresh and rich in fiber. Cold food and cold water are to be avoided. It is better to eat food that is warm. Lifestyle changes such as exercise and proper mealtimes are also helpful.
